At Cypress, when your child is in need of counseling, we begin with a family assessment to better understand directly from you the problems your child is facing and to hear your story as a parent. Our counselors work closely with parents to understand what is impacting your child’s difficulties and include you in regular meetings to support the changes that will best help your child’s mental health.
For young children, play therapy and experiential therapy help kids explore problems in their own ways of communicating. Techniques may include art therapy and sand tray therapy, use of props and toys to process struggles, and creative interventions tailored to your child. Common issues we address include depression, anxiety, behavioral aggression, school challenges, peer or family conflict, separation and loss.
For older children and teens, we try to connect on their level while providing a safe space for them to open up. Parent involvement is less frequent but still very important as we keep you informed and actively involved in the process.
They also need to know deeply that they are good inside. Shame can derail a child, leading to destructive behaviors that affect themselves and others. With children who have disruptive behaviors, we work hard to see their hearts and help them see what is underneath the behavior.

For both young children and teens, our therapy is trauma-informed and focuses on increasing secure attachment with key caregivers, developing healthy emotional regulation, and using Internal Family Systems (IFS) and parts work to reduce shame and increase self-understanding.
We help deeply feeling kids, who often struggle at home and school, feel truly known in their big feelings. With children who have disruptive behaviors, we work hard to see their hearts and help them see what is underneath the behavior. As Dr. Becky Kennedy says, “They’re a good kid, having a hard time, not a bad kid doing bad things.”
If your child or teen is struggling, we are here to help. We would be honored to be invited into this work with your family.
